The Maya Beach located close to the Thai island Koh Phi Phi was made famous with the movie “The Beach”. In current times the beach sees upwards of 5,000 visitors a day. The large numbers of visitors and the general disrespect to the beach and environment has resulted in the temporary closure of this buck list destination. When I visited the beach in 2014 I was shocked by the shear number of people. There was barely room to sit in the sand and enjoy the water. According to the Thai Dean of Fisheries, over 80% of Thailand’s reefs are gone due to tourism, beachfront resorts, and the dumping of waste. The human race needs to seriously reflect just how much damage we are willing to inflect on this earth for a good photo or cocktail conversation bragging rights.
