Visiting Koh Phi Phi was the most thoughtout, spontaneous decisions. One moment we would decide to skip the island, the next we would decide to go. We vacillated for over 24 hours finally deciding and booking the ferry to Koh Phi Phi one hour for it was set to leave.
We were unsure if we wanted to go because even though it was supposed to be beautiful it was also supposed to be full of drunk tourists; both notions were correct. The island was beautiful. We did a half day tour that I would have regretted missing had we not come. However, there was an incredible party atmosphere which did not fit with my mood.
My friend V and I stayed in Koh Phi Phi one night and caught the 3 pm ferry to Koh Lanta the next day.

Awesome photos! I’m planning on staying a night in Phi Phi next month and catching a ferry to Krabi the following day. Which area would be the easiest to stay in to reduce travel time as we are already pretty limited? Any suggestions on a hotel/hostel?

Thank you! Unfortunately there are no cars on Phi Phi so that means any where you want to go you’ll need to walk. We didnt book a reservation before arriving and as such had to walk around for about an hour before we found a place to stay. Phi Phi is a party island, as such most of the hostels are like 20 bed, and pretty loud and dirty. I would suggest finding something on hostelworld, or another site like it and then you will know exactly where you’re going and won’t waste time looking for one.
The party tends to be on the beach and by those hostels. The bay, where the ferry leaves, is in a different inlet.

We had actually already planned for three nights at Koh Lanta, so glad to hear that that was a good choice 🙂 Any preference as to which part of the island to stay there? I had heard Long Beach or Klong Dao might be good choices – without a car we probably need somewhere pretty central with easy access to everything.
On Phi Phi, is the beach a far walk from the bay? Do you think it would be best to stay on the beach and walk to the bay the next day to catch the ferry. Or walk to the beach and then stay overnight in the bay?

Of course! As far as where to stay it all depends on what you’re looking for. THe further down on the island ( away from the ferry dock) the quieter it gets. We ended up talking to this guy on the ferry and took up down to a place right outside of the national park. It was really quiet but I really enjoyed it. We also didn’t have a car but we rented motos from our hotel for super cheap and just drove them around the island. It was a really great way to explore different parts of the island and I highly recommend it!
Hmmm in my opinion it makes more sense to walk to the beach, spend the night, and then walk back to the bay to catch the ferry the next day. I was only on Phi Phi for one night as well and that’s what I did. But it all depends on what type of luggage you have. If you have rollers, than moving on the island will be difficult because as of November the roads are mud with some lakes (puddles lol) when it rains. Does this help? It also would depend on what you are looking for in your experience. Are you looking to party or just enjoy the island? Certain places and areas are much louder than others and if you want a quieter night I would recommend NOT spending the night close to the party beach. There are multiple places to stay off the party beach and I believe on some other beaches within the island but I’m not sure.
